Speeding and distracted driving were the leading causes of fatal crashes on eastern Ontario highways in 2024. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported 81 deaths from 72 fatal collisions on OPP-patrolled roads last year, with 13 more fatalities recorded so far in 2025.
Police are urging drivers to help make roads safer by reducing speed and staying focused. Chief Superintendent Lisa Wilhelm emphasized that slowing down can prevent tragedies and save lives.
Last year, speeding contributed to 26 fatal crashes, distracted driving to 16, impaired driving to 12, and failure to wear a seatbelt to 10. The OPP reminds all drivers and motorcyclists to drive responsibly—slow down, avoid impairment, stay focused, and always use proper safety gear.
