A multi-vehicle crash in Orillia, Ont., on Friday resulted in one death and several injuries, according to Ontario Provincial Police. Orillia Fire Chief Chris Ferry reported that approximately 50 vehicles were involved in the collision, which occurred around 9 a.m.
The crash has led to significant road closures, including the northbound lanes of Highway 11 between Highway 400 and Coldwater Road, and southbound lanes between County Road 169 and Line 15 in Oro Medonte. Several smaller road closures are also in effect.
A 49-year-old person died in the crash, though the exact number of injured and the details of the incidents are still unclear. A warming center has been set up at Rotary Place in Orillia, where around 50 people are sheltering. Snow squalls are complicating conditions, with hazardous visibility reported in the area.
The OPP advises against unnecessary travel due to poor visibility, and there are additional collisions being handled in the region.
