A multi-vehicle collision on Highway 416 in eastern Ontario late Friday night left more than eight people injured. The incident occurred just before midnight, between Highway 401 and County Road 21, south of Spencerville. A northbound vehicle veered off the road and rolled into the ditch, prompting several people to stop and offer assistance.
Another vehicle then left the road, struck one of the parked vehicles, and entered the ditch, injuring several people. Four individuals sustained serious injuries, and at least four others had minor injuries.
The OPP highlighted poor weather conditions at the time, with icy roads leading to nearly 70 collisions across eastern Ontario between midnight and 9 a.m. On Highway 401 near Kingston, 12 collisions occurred in just two hours.
The OPP has advised against non-essential travel and urged caution for those on the road. Highway 416 remained closed for investigation and road clearing until Saturday afternoon. A second storm with freezing rain is expected to affect the region Sunday.
