An 81-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck near Wilson Avenue and Bathurst Street around 10:45 a.m., according to Toronto police. The woman, who was crossing Wilson, was hit by the truck as it turned right onto the avenue from the Highway 401 off-ramp. Despite bystanders’ efforts to help, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

This marks the third pedestrian fatality in Toronto this year, following a separate incident involving a dump truck in East York, where a 46-year-old woman remains in critical condition.

Traffic safety advocate Sean Shapiro highlighted the issue of pedestrian accidents involving dump trucks, noting their significant blind spots, which can extend up to 20 feet in front, making it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. The company involved in Tuesday’s crash, Hassan Habib Transport, said it was cooperating with the investigation, but had no further information.

Police have not yet determined if charges will be laid. Investigators continued their work at the scene, collecting surveillance footage and witness statements. The driver, a 53-year-old man, is under investigation.
