The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently conducting an investigation into a deadly two-vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 17, situated east of Sudbury. The collision took place on the stretch of highway between Highway 535 and Highway 575 in Verner.
According to a news release from the OPP, emergency services were dispatched following reports of the crash shortly after 11 a.m. ET on January 23. At the scene, a 69-year-old individual from Sault Ste. Marie was declared deceased, while three others received treatment for minor injuries. The release further stated that two additional individuals were airlifted by Air ORNGE to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, where a 74-year-old from Wawa later passed away.
Highway 17 was closed in both directions between Highway 535 and Highway 575 for over eight hours. The investigation into the cause of this fatal collision is ongoing, and it remains uncertain whether any charges will be filed.
