A serious collision involving multiple vehicles in Cobourg has led to the closure of Highway 401, with authorities from the Ontario Provincial Police stating that the road will be inaccessible for an extended duration.

The crash, which involved both tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles, was precipitated by a narrow band of heavy lake effect snow that adversely affected driving conditions on the highway east of Oshawa on Wednesday morning. Northumberland OPP have confirmed that injuries have been sustained.

The incident took place west of Burnham Street (County Road 18), prompting traffic to be diverted. Emergency responders, including fire and paramedic teams, are actively managing the situation on-site.
